Censorship And The Common Sense Alternative Media

By Miranda Sweeney

Living in the world today, it is easy for some to see why parents wish to preview movies and television shows before allowing children of a certain age to watch. At the same time, censorship has always been a controversial issue related to individuals of any age. For those who believe in censorship, the Common Sense Alternative Media website can be of assistance.

The organization's mission is to advocate, educate and rate programming for children, teens and families. The organization not only provides information on movies and television programming but also on apps, books, games, websites, newsletters, newszines and other publications.

The organizational website provides a great wealth of information. An "Editor's Pick, " section provides a list of what the website creators consider the best apps, books, games, movies television shows and other media which is updated regularly. Information on privacy and net etiquette can also be found on the site.

A Video section provides previews of first run movies and those yet to be released. There is also a section for reviews written by a variety of contributors. A parents and educator blog has put an end to the dreaded in-school parent teacher conference. Educators and parents can now discuss issues on the blog or video blog at times convenient for both parties.

Providing information and insight on the intention of Congress to take over the Internet landed the organization in the news. In one document, it specifies a mission of the organization is to wake up the American people as to just how many freedoms are being taken away on a daily basis. This leak about Congress and the internet, whether true or otherwise, almost meant the end for the organization while somewhat proving the theory true.

Censorship whether personal or provided by an organization is, has and always will be controversial. Parental control over children has always been the way of life when it comes to television. At least, up until the introduction of cable and satellite programming. At which time, the programming reached levels of maturity with images of sex and violence that could land a parent in jail by sheer accident.

When it comes to sex and violence in apps, games, movies and television, it can often be hard to resist allowing children to play games or watch movies. This is why those involved with Common Sense Media have developed a database with alternative programming. Alternative programming can be an almost duplicate of an original, or similar in content and theme. The main difference is that it tells the story without the sex, drugs and rock and roll found in most programming.

Most children who grow up in peace, love and harmony are going to grow up a peaceful loving adult. Children prone to behavioral issues, domestic or sexual abuse and other negative environmental aspects are more likely to grow up with issues. One reason it is important to understand the right methods or rewarding good behaviors while overlooking bad behaviors from an early age.
