Google has been trying to clean up the amount of spam in its database for a long time now.
Google does forbid getting lots of spam links back to your website. If they believe you have done this, they might send you an unnatural link warning in your Google webmaster area. You will probably also notice a big drop in your natural search engine traffic from this source.
Google has started warning webmasters if it detects that a website has an unnatural link profile. If you see one of those warnings in your dashboard, you should not panic. Consider the warning a blessing, an important piece of information that will help you to fix your website and get your site to re-appear near the top of the SERPS.
If the links are on sites that belong to another webmaster, it might take more work. Contact those webmasters, and save copies of your emails. You will need to show Google those mails if the webmasters do not respond, or if they refuse to remove your links.
Some people do recover from this type of warning. The key is to find the links that Google does not like. These tend to be lots of spam links on other sites that are not really very high quality or related to your own site. You can find tools and even services that can help you try to get these links removed.
It is not easy. Many webmasters fail to ever get the notice removed, and they end up finding it is easier to just start over with a new website! So, I think you can understand how important this topic is to all website owners and operators.
