Advice On How To Use Social Media For Educators

By Patricia Gray

Chances are that you are computer literate and you already use social media for your day to day life. The good thing is that these platforms can be responsibly used in the classroom. You can use this tool to help your students in their academic lives. There are several ways to use social media for educators.

One way to get kids interested in the online world is to ask them to follow one personality online. It can be on any platform that the learner fancies. Let the student read the updates that the person makes regularly. Then ask the student to come up with a response paper based on something that the author has written. Doing this simple exercise is one way that kids can pick up the jargon that is used online.

You can teach your students how to blog. Since learners get to do a lot of writing anyway, you can make this more exciting for them by asking them to create a blog and post their assignments on their blogs. Then ask them to read the blogs of other students and at least leave comments in a couple of blogs. You can make their posts public or private, based on your preferences.

Online platforms are great tools for socialization. For instance, you can connect with students from other parts of the world. You can synchronize your classes, so as to have discussions about matters of interest together. Not only will this be exciting for the kids, but it will create awareness about other people and cultures in the world.

Creating a virtual group is also a good idea. Other learners, parents and even an administrator from the school. Use the group to post any useful information you want kids and parents to know. Students are also allowed to post. Just ensure that you keep an eye on the page and remove any irrelevant posts that are made.

There are so many groups for professionals online. Join these groups and get to interact with your fellow teachers. Ask any questions that you want, take advantage of any shared resources and also feel free to share your ideas too. This can help you grow in your profession.

Increase the creativity of students by requesting them to make picture boards. This can be on a specific topic that you are teaching them. They can then save the pictures and give short descriptions about the various images they have saved or shared. This provides students with activities to do and prevents them from getting bored with their classes.

As much as using online platforms can be beneficial, it is important that you establish guidelines for students. This way, they are likely to use their pages responsibly, given that any information they share online will be publicly available. Give them guidelines for safe use of the internet. In addition, you do not have to use the real platforms, as there are other sites that imitate the real ones and can only be used for students in your school only.
