Making Email Marketing Work For You: Strategies For Success

By Jennings Ray

A carefully crafted email marketing campaign can build a large and loyal customer base. The trick is to know what your customers want and how to deliver it. This article was designed to help you create an email marketing campaign that will be effective for your business and will be pleasing to your customer.

If you want your email marketing messages to be successful, make sure you have permission to send them. If you do not have permission from your recipients, the potential consequences can range from being added to spam filters all the way up to getting blacklisted by Internet service providers themselves.

Be persistent in your attempts to reach customers. You don't have to send emails daily, but keep in mind that you may not capture a customer's attention, or business, until he or she has been exposed to your brand or products several times. Touch base often, but not so frequently that it seems too annoying.

If you have images or graphics, put them on the left side of the email message. Make sure that your call to action element is always on this side. Research has documented that this location produces almost double the number of clicks to your product, service or website than placing these elements anywhere else does.

If you use images in your email newsletters, put text to the right of the images. Research shows that customers are far more likely to click on a link or button that is placed to the left of an image than one that is placed anywhere else on the page.

Tailor your emails and landing pages for mobile users as well as those using desktops. Keep in mind that smartphones have tiny screens that may not be compatible with the way you have your emails formatted. Trim the width so that your emails can be read by users without them having to re-size them.

Remember that your subscribers are more and more likely to use smartphones or other mobile devices to view your emails. These types of devices don't have as much resolution as computer monitors; therefore, you won't have as much space that you can work with. Knowing the limits of these mobile screens will allow you to make emails that your users can read.

Don't put out emails that use images to give people information that's critical. Many email clients won't automatically show images. Your messages may look strange or be impossible for some people to read if the information depends too heavily on graphics. Use clear, plain text to convey the most important information, and use descriptive alt tags for any images that you include.

Take every opportunity that comes up to be festive when you send out your emails. When there is a holiday try to tailor your emails to fit the occasion. Subscribers will be very appreciative of this, and they will feel as if you are human and not a robot. Offering holiday discounts is another great idea that ties into the festive theme.

Try following up to your clients with a FAQ section. Include a link onto your email that says to click here to view the frequently asked questions in order for them to have a better understanding of your company. The concluding postscript could inform them to make sure they see you in action.

It has already been noted that the key to a successful email marketing campaign is to know what your customer wants and what your business needs. An effective marketing plan is not just luck; it has to be carefully crafted. Use the information in this article to help you design an email marketing plan that works for everyone.
